The Story Behind The Old Rugged Cross
This song is a constant reminder of the precious sacrifice of my Lord Jesus Christ on the cross, it touches my spirit and my soul each time I listen to it. I sang this song when I was a teenager and when I gave my life to God in the year this song was sang again in the service and ever since I can't stop singing this soul lifted song. I cherish that rugged cross and I pray I meet my saviour one day. My Brother even now lays dying in the hospital.

George Bennard finished "The Old Rugged Cross" and on the last night of the meeting Bennard and Mieras performed it as a duet before a full house with Pearl Torstensen Berg, organist for the meeting, as accompanist. Gabriel , a well-known gospel-song composer helped Bennard with the harmonies. Bennard retired to Reed City, Michigan , and the town maintains a museum dedicated to his life and ministry. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven ; and the song also played a major part in " Gridlock " , an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In his art parody volume Art Afterpieces, Ward Kimball created a variation on the painting Expulsion from Paradise by the 15th-century artist Giovanni di Paolo , which shows God pointing at a large circle below him.
