Anything you want to tell us about that? Tom's piece will be done at the Met next year and if I can finish the score in time, our show will be done simultaneously at The Public Theater. And for people who are interested in the difference between operas and musicals; it ought to be an enlightening and provocative study. Stephen Sondheim is undoubtedly one of musical theatre's greatest living writers, and at the age of 86 any new work that he is involved with becomes big news. Whilst no Sondheim musical has originated in London, his work is big news in the theatrical landscape of the city, with his shows constantly being revived to mass critical attention. Sondheim's output has slowed down considerably since he reached his 70s, with new shows such as Passion and Assassins in the s both going on to find mass critical acclaim and love from London audiences. His last musical Road Show seen in earlier instalments as Gold, Bounce or Wise Guys had its London premiere at the Menier in , and was recently revived on the fringe at the Union Theatre. Fans all over the world have been gripped to information regarding his upcoming musical, which recently held a workshop in New York in front of an exclusive invited audience.
Playwright David Ives. Of course, as with so many rumors in this ever-changing business, came and went without another word or story or sense of what exactly is going on with this anticipated collaboration between Sondheim and playwright David Ives. The two films being adapted, The Exterminating Angel and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie , both share one plot-point in common: dinner. Discreet Charm follows three couples as their desperate attempts to simply eat a meal together are foiled again and again by increasingly absurd interruptions. Exterminating Angel , on the other hand, centers itself on the aftermath of a dinner party wherein the guests find themselves unable to leave the room.
He is also known for writing the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy The composer grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and, after his parents divorced, on a farm near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. As the only child of well-to-do parents living in the San Remo on Central Park West , he was described in Meryle Secrest 's biography Stephen Sondheim: A Life as an isolated, emotionally neglected child. He later attended the New York Military Academy and George School , a private Quaker preparatory school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he wrote his first musical, By George,  and from which he graduated in Sondheim spent several summers at Camp Androscoggin.
